The Story
When the distant world of Blobolonia is threatened by an evil and frightening emperor, one of its denizens, a being known as a blob, makes the world-changing decision to stand up for what is right. This brings about his journey to Earth in search of help for his world. Here he discovers two unexpected things, the friendship and loyalty of a young boy and an overwhelming love for jellybeans of various flavors. Both will prove important before this adventure is through. Help the blob dethrone the evil emperor that's terrorizing Blobolonia and establish a friendship with the blob that will last a lifetime.

A Boy and his Blob is a side-scrolling platformer that teams the player up with the game's namesake amorphous blob as you navigate 80 game levels that make up the dangerous terrain of Blobolonia and take on the baddies and bosses that are terrorizing it. Your main weapon in this is the power of the Blob to transform himself into a variety of useful forms. There are 15 of these, and all are initiated by specifically flavored jellybeans. Just a few of the flavor/forms that can be expected are Caramel Cannon, Bubble Gum Bouncer, Licorice Ladder, Apple Jack and Tangerine Trampoline. During gameplay the Blob's transformative powers are balanced by the relative weakness and limited movement of the boy, but it's through his hands, and the jellybeans he tosses, that the powers of the Blob reach their height.

2 out of 5 stars Hardly worth the time....   September 2, 2010

In light of all the great 2D platformers of the SNES/Playstation/Genesis era, I simply could not recommend a game with such low production values. I know this game is just a remake of an NES game, but this would have made a better downloadable game for $10 then a more full-priced retail game. Broken down:

Graphics - Looks great...for an SNES game. But that was 15 years ago, and this game brings nothing new to the table visually and doesn't even come close to what one expects of a current generation title.

Music - Incredibly repetitive. The tunes are not memorable and the same song will play for several stages in a row so you are left listening to the same tune for hours.

Plot - What plot? Not like a platformer needs one, but it still would have been nice to at least have a little character development. Title says it all.

Controls and Gameplay - Very easy and intuitive, you just toss jellybeans around to turn your blob into tools and then solve simple puzzles. I barely ever got stuck in the game and you have unlimited lives and tons of checkpoints throughout a level so frustration stays at a minimum--except on the challenge levels, those are a whole other story. The game description says there are 80 levels but its really more like 40 with another 40 short challenge levels you can unlock for collecting all 3 treasure chests in a level. I barely coaxed myself to finish the game, but only so I could hurry up and sell it. I would never play this game again. Far too boring.

4 out of 5 stars A Boy and His Blob   August 18, 2010

The game is overall fun because of the childhood game that I played. It isn't any where near as challenging as the regular NES game was but still glad to see that a new game came out to keep the memory going.

5 out of 5 stars Building Complexity   August 14, 2010
Shane Allen Windham (Dallas, TX)
This game is a real treat. It starts you off doing some of the simplest things and quickly begins to increase the depth and complexity of the gameplay. But it never really becomes something most anyone could pick up and play at any time. You play as a young boy, who is every bit as fragile and easily destroyed by enemies as you would expect a child to be. This keeps you constantly depending on your companion the blob to form ladders and parachutes and many other such useful things to get you through each stage. You simply select the object you want the blob to be and feed him a bean to make him become that object. The bosses are actually a real challenge and there are some advanced challenge modes which will keep you playing stages over and over again. And you'll want to play stages over and over again. Because there aren't many games that give you such complexity in such a simple way. Perfect for almost any age; this is one any 2d fan will love.

3 out of 5 stars Easy does it.   April 29, 2010

This is a nice little game if you are tired of the fast paced shooters. It's fairly easy and simple to play. Yet, has puzzles to solve and items to find.My one complaint is there are no instructions or even hints on controls. Otherwise, this is a good game for all ages. Just be aware that the play is somewhat slow and might be too boring for some.

5 out of 5 stars Puzzle game   April 29, 2010
Witzkeyman (New York, NY)
This game is a puzzle game, and not really a platformer. This must be said. Some people will get stuck on certain levels, but there is always a way to get through. For instance, it took me 15 minutes to figure out that I had to feed my blob a trampoline bean in a hole and then push a rock on top of the trampoline to provide a step at a higher platform, because otherwise the bird kept eating the beans I would feed. This game is very similar to Braid for the PS3 which is a download, and usually gets a 5 out of 5 reviews. Braid is 15 dollars, but A Boy and his Blob is much easier and I enjoy the plot and setting better. A Boy and his Blob also uses the new Wii Classic Controller Pro - White, and was the first game I tested the controller out with.

**Considering the price of this game(sixteen dollars), A Boy and His Blob deserves 5 stars.

Update 5/1/10: make sure you search for youtube videos when you get stuck. I did get stuck at the first boss, and needed the help. The first boss can take forever to defeat without that help. I accessed the youtube video and defeated the boss quickly after.
